Early 2018 Postseason Projections

Here’s a quick glance at each team’s playoff chances as we get ready to head into the second half of the season. Each team’s playoff chance is based off of thousands of simulations ran by FanGraphs that took into account every team’s remaining schedule, run differential, roster composition and playing time projections.

American League East

The Yankees and Red Sox have been in a tight race all season for the AL East crown. It should be a fun race to watch in the second half, with the 2nd place finisher surely securing a spot in the wild card game.

American League East

American League Central

The Cleveland Indians are once again the class of the American League Central. As the only team over .500, the Indians will likely cruise to the finish line and walk away as champions of the Central Division.

American League Central

American League West

The AL West is probably the deepest division in baseball. The defending champion Houston Astros lead the division with the Mariners and Athletics both featuring strong clubs with chances of making the postseason. A talented Angels team will look to spoil some team’s playoff chances and hold on to the outside chance of finding themselves in the wild card game.

American League West

National League East

Although the Phillies and Braves are currently atop the division standings, the Washington Nationals have the greatest chance of making the playoffs according to the simulations run by FanGraphs. Only time will tell if the experienced Nationals will be able to outlast the much younger and possibly more talented Braves and Phillies.

National League East

National League Central

The NL Central should have two teams representing the division in this postseason. The Brewers and Cubs have both looked like playoff caliber clubs in the first half and are both closely trailed by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Central race will definitely be one to keep an eye on down the stretch.

National League Central

National League West

The closest division in baseball and quite possibly the most interesting race to watch down the stretch might be the NL West. With 4 teams still within striking distance of the division title, every game will matter in the NL West in the second half.

National League West

In Conclusion

Anything can happen in the game of baseball. Over the years, there have been major meltdowns and tremendous comebacks in the second half of the season. Stay tuned in the second half to see if your team will make the postseason.
